Fujifilm Holdings has moved to strengthen its position in the global semiconductor supply chain, opening a new manufacturing facility dedicated to producing post-CMP cleaning chemicals, a class of specialty materials that has become increasingly vital as chipmakers race to meet demand tied to artificial intelligence, according to Japan Times.
The newly opened fabrication building will increase Fujifilm's capacity to produce post-CMP cleaners, chemical solutions used in one of the final and most delicate stages of wafer processing. After chips undergo chemical-mechanical polishing, a process that flattens and smooths the surface of a silicon wafer so that subsequent layers of circuitry can be built with precision, manufacturers must remove microscopic particles, metal residues and other contaminants left behind. Even trace amounts of debris can compromise a chip's performance or cause it to fail outright, making these cleaning agents a small but indispensable part of the chipmaking process.
While Fujifilm is widely recognized outside Japan for its cameras, instant film and imaging products, the company has spent decades building a substantial and often overlooked business supplying specialty chemicals to the semiconductor industry. That division has increasingly become a core growth engine as the company diversifies away from its legacy photography operations, which have shrunk considerably since the rise of digital imaging.
The timing of this expansion is closely tied to the broader boom in artificial intelligence infrastructure. AI workloads, particularly the training and operation of large language models, require enormous numbers of advanced logic and memory chips, and the data centers built to house them have driven a sustained surge in demand across the semiconductor supply chain. Chipmakers such as TSMC, Samsung and Intel have all announced significant capacity expansions in recent years to keep pace, and that growth cascades down to the smaller companies that supply the specialty materials and equipment those fabs depend on.
Post-CMP cleaning chemicals sit within a broader category of semiconductor materials that includes photoresists, etching gases and polishing slurries, areas where Japanese firms such as Fujifilm, Shin-Etsu Chemical, JSR and Tokyo Ohka Kogyo hold outsized global market share. This concentration reflects decades of accumulated expertise in fine chemical engineering and close, long-term relationships with major chip manufacturers, who require extremely high purity and consistency from their material suppliers given the razor-thin tolerances involved in modern chip fabrication.
By expanding domestic production capacity rather than relying solely on existing facilities, Fujifilm appears to be positioning itself to capture a larger share of this growth while also hedging against potential supply disruptions. The semiconductor industry has faced repeated reminders in recent years of how fragile global supply chains can be, from pandemic-era shortages to geopolitical tensions that have prompted governments and companies alike to reassess overreliance on any single source or region.
Japan's government has also taken an increasingly active role in supporting the country's chip materials and equipment industries, viewing them as strategically important both economically and in terms of national security. Tokyo has offered subsidies and incentives to encourage domestic investment in semiconductor-related manufacturing, part of a broader effort to reestablish Japan's relevance in an industry it once dominated in the 1980s before losing ground to competitors in the United States, South Korea and Taiwan.
For Fujifilm specifically, the electronic materials business represents an important pillar of its long-term strategy as it continues to shift its corporate identity. The company has invested heavily in areas such as healthcare, biopharmaceuticals and specialty chemicals in recent years, seeking sources of growth that can offset the steady decline of its traditional imaging business. Semiconductor materials, buoyed by the AI-driven demand cycle, have emerged as one of the more promising avenues for that transformation.
Analysts covering the chip supply chain have noted that even as attention tends to focus on the marquee names producing processors and memory chips, the companies supplying the underlying materials often see comparably strong demand growth, since virtually every additional wafer produced requires a corresponding increase in chemicals like post-CMP cleaners. That dynamic gives specialty materials producers a degree of exposure to the AI boom without the same level of competitive intensity or capital expenditure faced by the chipmakers themselves.
Whether this latest expansion proves sufficient to meet demand will likely depend on how long the current AI infrastructure buildout continues. Some industry observers have raised questions about whether current levels of investment in AI data centers and chip capacity are sustainable over the long run, though for now, demand signals from major chipmakers suggest continued growth, giving suppliers like Fujifilm confidence to invest in additional capacity.
The move also underscores the extent to which Japan's specialty chemical sector, once viewed as a mature and slow-growing part of the economy, has found renewed relevance amid the global race to build out AI capabilities. As chipmakers push the physical limits of semiconductor manufacturing, the materials and processes required to keep pace, however unglamorous compared to the chips themselves, have taken on outsized importance in determining who can keep up with demand.
